The Process Of Selecting A Divorce Attorney

By John A. Patti

When you are in the middle of dissolving a marriage, trust can be hard to give to someone else. As your divorce attorney is going to be responsible for some of the most important aspects of your life, such as custody rights of any children you may have, it is important that you choose one that you can trust. While choosing one may seem overwhelming, as long as you use a few standard tactics, you will be able to find the best one for your situation.

It is very important to realize that each one is different from another. To choose the best divorce attorney, you must be able to categorize your own situation into one of their specialties. After all, if you know that you are going to have a big fight on your hands, a mediation lawyer is not the best choice. You would benefit more by choosing one that has a great record in litigation and one that will stand up to a long battle in the courtroom.

More often than not, you will know one or more people that have been through a divorce. Ask everyone you know which lawyer they used. Once you have a list of names, you can then start researching each one. Look to see if they have a website and see what type of feeling you get. After you have a found two or three that you want to learn more about, set up a consultation with them.

The consultation itself can be tricky. Many of the more experienced lawyers will charge a fee for a consultation. Do not dismiss them from your list because of this, though. In truth, the lawyer who charges a fee to discuss a potential case are confidant in their abilities and will only take on your case if they feel they can win. In your consultation, ask their experience in matters like your own and choose the one that you feel most comfortable with and the one you feel will help you the most.

Even though the divorce process is not easy, the right divorce attorney can help to take some of your stress away. While it may seem difficult to put the outcome of your life in someone else's hands, by doing the research and talking with each prospective lawyer, you will be able to make the right decision in choosing your representation.
