Rare Divorce in the Traditional Societies

By Mercy Nikenya

Compared with the present divorce rate, in the past it was very rare and even not heard of. People today tend to misunderstand each other in a small issue and end up in a break up. This leads to disturbances in the entire family, including children of the couple and the wealth that they had maybe accumulated. Is it that the factors which make a contribution to divorce weren't in existence in the past?

Consider a marriage in today's world. One meets a partner in town; they know each other for few days and organize for a marriage even without the knowledge of their parents. When a weakness is revealed later , it could easily lead to separation. This was not the case during our forefathers times, parents of both families arranged for the marriage.

People in the past got into marriages when only the partners were allowed during the dating time, this greatly boosted both parties to know and learn more about their marriage partners.

Customs with different cultures tend to vary. People today intermarry. When a partner fails to understand the customs of the other party and even feel they are pushing him/her into practicing them, all goes sour and they may separate as they don't blend at all.

Traditionally, people in many cases got married within their tribe. This helped as the partners getting into a marriage were all aware of their culture and what was required of them. This was a boost to rare separation.

The urge to imitate the western culture in many families has too contributed to the increase of divorce cases. People want to live a life which is not of their standard; failing to manage it leads a break up. Imagine a married woman wanting to dress like any other girl in town, respect to the in-laws is lost; an attempt to tell her to stop this may make her depart.

In the past, a problem would be presented to a council of elders to solve the matter and even utter curses to the wrong doer. Nowadays, it is rare for a couple to seek such help. It is because the powers they had are no longer considered. People seek divorce from courts where money talks.

Today, the constitution allows for divorce. Though high costs are involved in the process, people still consider it. This was not the case in the past. They had no constitution to encourage divorce and a justification for divorce was rare to find.
