Separation Save Marriage - Really True?

By Trinia Poloan

Deciding to separate from your spouse might be a last resort for most people involved in a relationship. Once a marriage becomes this difficult there are usually many other issues that have to be confronted before the relationship can be considered fixed. Can separation save marriage? Only if both parties will put their time and effort into it.

Both spouses must agree that during the separation they will not date anyone else. This time apart could possibly be used to reflect on the relationship and work on issues individually with a counselor. It can also be used to allow the husband and wife to think about what drew them to their spouse in the first place.

If one party in the marriage is decided on separating and the other party doesn't agree, this can escalate into much larger problems for the relationship. It is usually most helpful to have both people agree that separation is important and the right thing for their situation. If this is not an option, it can lead to more anger and issues with the relationship.

If children are involved, separation may not be the easiest solution to fix the relationship. The children must be informed of the decision to separate and it will most likely cause them anxiety and stress if they do not understand the reasons for one parent moving out of the home. Counselors can be provided for the children in this type of situation, and it should be considered very carefully before involving children.

A time apart can lead to an awakening for one or both spouses. Losing the person who has been beside you day after day for all of your relationship can sometimes show you exactly what you would be missing if they were away permanently. In the best situation, a small separation allows the partners to remember how much they love their spouse and how much the other person means to them.

In conclusion, can separation save marriage? It can have both good and bad effects on both the people involved and the relationship itself. Consider very carefully before deciding to spend time living separately from your spouse. It's always possible that there could be a better way to save your marriage.
