By Alexandra Bishop

It is a sad truth that many of the marriages nowadays are falling apart and divorce is now becoming commonplace. Due to its rapid increase in number since the 19th century, the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) mandated that these records should be accessed by the public anytime. All fifty states in United States, including New York has created its own archive of documents. The New York Divorce Records are maintained by the New York Vital Records Office.

A divorce record can be requested in a form of a decree that contains the separation term which is acknowledged and signed by the state judge. Another form of a divorce record is in a form of a certificate that has basic divorce data like the divorcee's name, the county where they were legally separated, the date and time along with their witnesses.

Requesting for divorce records, unlike other documents, would require approval from the Supreme Court. The document can only be retrieved from the county where the couple had separated legally. One would be needed to prepare a proof of identification along with a valid reason for requesting such information. In New York, a fee of $10-$30, depending on the date of divorce is charged to the one who requests for the information. Records which dated from January 1963 would cost $30 and $10 for years before that. The amount would cover the processing fee for the retrieval of the requested information.

Most of the reasons given by those who request for the divorce record are when they want to marry again or when they are moving to a new location. When requesting for a divorce record which was granted in New York, it has be filed at the New York Vital Records Office. The bride and groom's information will be asked such as the name, the birth date and birth place. In addition to that, the place where the divorce was filed and the date of the separation will also be required.

The Divorce record can be requested via mail for those who are living outside the county where the couple was legally separated. A check payment can be sent to the New York Vital Records Office. This option may take a longer time mainly because of the distance.

Luckily, because of the emergence of the internet, divorce records can now be pulled out faster and because of this more are now using this technology to gather the information that they need. The information can now be retrieved immediately via the internet when the correct information is provided. Divorce court records can be accessed when you log on to the Official New York state website.
